Our Digipak Second Draft

We have decided to change some images on our digipak, we were unhappy with the image on the front of the digipak so we decided to look at other pictures to what we could change it to. We tried various images as we had to get one which suited the rest of the digipak and matched its theme. A single image alone didn't seem to suit the rest of the digipak, so on photoshop we found a setting which meant we could change the image into polaroid pictures, we then turned 2 images into polaroids and set them both as the front cover. We think this stands out nicely and makes the digipak look more complete. This version of the digipak is shown below;

New Front Cover

 Same Inside Cover

We are happy with this version of our digipak and are going to be adding writing onto to digipak to complete it, after we have done this we will update it.

Our Digipak First Draft

This is our first idea for our digipak, we have arranged the images so that they do not look to crowded within the frame.

The Inside Cover

The outside Cover

However we are thinking of changing the image on the outside cover to the right, we do not think that this image sits appropriately with the rest of the digipak

Starting Our Digipak

Since recently finishing our music video, we have decided to work on our digipak, unlike the digipak which I displayed in a recent post ours will be different as we are hoping to use one long image across the section containing the disks. Although on the other 3 where some of the writing will be they will be 3 separate images. So far we have come up with a rough idea of what we want our digipak to look like, however we will be editing it and working on it to make it to a higher standard.

Digipak Photos

To make our digipak relate more to our song we have decided we do not want to take separate pictures for our digipak. This means we want to take stills from our music video to use as then the video and the digipak will have a link.
However we are thinking we will have to use a few separate images if we cannot find any pictures which we think link with the song, the video and all fit together nicely in the frame.
Below are some images we were thinking of using;

Digipak - Collecting and Analysing Ideas

After researching digipak ideas it helped us to gain an understanding on what to include on our digipak. Also the focus group helped us to make a decision on whether to use a photograph or not. Due to the positive feedback on using a photograph, we decided to take pictures which we may use.

This image can be seen as being relevent to our music video, this is because we may get one of the characters to wear this necklace. By having close up shots of it in our music video, it means that if we use this image on our digipak then the digipak will have reference to our music video. However the problem with this image is that it is not very eye catching and most of the left image is blank. This could mean that using this image may make our digipak look very dull.

This is an image which was taken by another group member. The girl in the image is one of the characters in our music video. If we were to use this image on the digipak it has a good reference to the music video itself. Also we believe this image is better than the previous image as the trees make a good backdrop. They also provide the image with a more full look, and it doesn’t look like the frame is empty.

Here is the same image which a member of my group cropped on photoshop, he kept it to the same dimentions which will be needed on the digipak, so it could still be useful. In my opinion I do not like this image as much as the previous one. This is because in the first image I like how the green of the leaves contrasts with the brown on the floor. This is something which needs to be discussed as a group.

This image was taken a while ago, we thought it could be used as it is a cute image which matches the whole ‘vibe’ of our music video. However it may not be relevant to our digipak, this is because it may only be useful if we included some blurred lights in our footage.

Digipak - Creating a Template

By using photoshop we could draw lines to the correct dimensions which we needed for out digipak whilst keeping the remainder of the image clear. This meant that we could quickly place the images into the template where we wanted them, without having to adjust the design. This meant we saved time and enabled toe designing process to be more efficient.
The image of this is shown below;

Digipak Collecting Ideas

As part of making the music video, we also have to create a digipak, this is the packaging for the CD. The digipak needs to be eye catching, usually with bright colours and normally relevant to the song. We decided to each investigate a different CD on coverdude.com. This enables us to gain a better understanding of what a digipak could look like and what you should include.
One album was the eye catching image from Ellie Goulding and her 'Bright Lights' album. This sis very inspiring for us as it is like the image we are thinking of using.

ellie-goulding-bright-lights-back-cover-60410.jpg

Both the front and the back of the digipak are similar, both showing the same type of image with bright lights which are out of focus. This reflects on the name of the album and maybe we will think of doing something like this. The yellow on the actual disk also reflects the case and the song, with it also being a bright colour.

This image would reflect on part of our music video and would be easy to replicate, however i think we would add our own touch to it, by having the girl and the boy in the image and make the colours seem brighter so it is more eye catching.

Soulmates_by_ValentinaKallias.jpg

This image to other images which i have looked at, it involves colours which make it have a vintage feel about it and makes it more relevant to our music video. Also it is different as it is not a full landscape but a close up image. Also it will be very easy to remake this image.

Planning: The Digipak

Today we decided we are going to start designing a digipak soon, we need to decide what pictures we want to use, the placement of the pictures and the style and positioning of the writing.

We will be using a 6 sided digipak, 2 of the panels will hold disks, one of them will be a CD whereas the other one will be a DVD of the song and the music video.

Below is an example of a six sided digipak;

Digipak Analysis

In order to gain a further understanding of digipak analysis i decided to analyse a digipak which had the basics on which to include on the album. I made it on a powerpoint and then uploaded it to slideshare;

Digipak - What to include

In class we discussed what should be included in the digipak, by including all of these it can make our product look to a more professional standard. The 5 essesntial things which should be included are;
  • Six Panels
  • A Spine
  • A Barcode
  • The Track List
  • The disk impression
There are other elements which could be included, however we would only include them if we had time to do so. These elements are;
  • Band information section/booklet
  • Free image/Poster
  • Membership postcard/flyer

Editing; Potential Problems

When we went to London we tried to film some footage where I was lip syncing the song faster. It had been sped up by 40%. This meant when we went to edit it we would slow the song and the footage back down by 40% so that the people in the background would appear to be walking slower, and it would look like the world is moving slowly around the girl.
However when we edited the footage this did not appear as easy as what we hoped it had be, although the people were moving slower, the lip syncing was jumpy and it seems distorted to the rest of the song, this appeared a problem so we decided not to use this footage.
Also we noticed that the filming we had done in London didn't match the rest of the music video, so far there had been a lot os field scenes and it seemed vintage and surreal, London footage made it look too modern and as there was too many people it seemed that the girl had lost her sense of loneliness.

Editing Using Photoshop

We also used photoshop to edit some text used in our footage, before the music video starts the text that is shown with our names and candidate numbers was edited using Photoshop. The reason we used photoshop at this point was so that we could get the writing the right font, size and colour so that it stood out on the background and didn't seem squished in the frame.
Once edited we saved the image as a .png file, this  meant it was easier to import into final cut express

Below is an image of the text I am talking about;

Editing using LiveType

When editing the Music Video we had to place 'Allie Moss, Corner' at the beginning of the music video, we done this within the first few frames of the music video. However we couldn't get the text to sit in proportion to the images on the screen so we took a picture of the text 'Allie Moss, Corner'  opened it into Livetype and edited it in there so that it would  fit to the frame nicely.
The problems we faced when doing this was being unable to get the text the correct size, however after messing about with the controls for a while we found that it was quite simple.
Once completed we exported the image using quicktime movie and could easily import it into final cut express.

Below is an image of the text I am talking about;

Editing, Trimming of Clips

We imported the footage into final cut express in large clips, however we realised that with clips of about 3 minutes it would be harder to edit. Before we edited out footage we uploaded all of the large clips and saved them, we then cut all of the large clips down smaller and saved it again. By doing this it became easier to place the clips in the order that we wanted, and the editing didn't become too confusing.

This images show the smaller cuts, after we had cut down the larger clips;
