Editing The Montage Section

 Today we decided to edit our montage section of our music video, this is the last section of the video. We wanted it to look more upbeat than the rest of the music video as it was supposed to represent the girls happy memories of her and her boyfriend. We needed to also make it obvious to the audience that the girl was entering a dreamlike state. So by using final cut express we could make the contrast and brightness at least white so that it was noticable the setting was changing. This is when the brightness was changed;

To also show the memories the quality of the video was not as good as the rest of the filming, however this made it look as though they were home videos or it was another persons point of view of the two people.

We used vignetting to get the corners of the frame to go darker to make the two characters seem more centre of the frame. This is how we done it;

And this is what it created;
- You can notice the dark shades at the top corners of the image.

Furthermore we made the memory shots all the same length so they fitting with the song better.

We also edited the colour and the contrast of these clips so they looked brighter and gave a more happier feel to the music video

The Graveyard Section

Editing the Graveyard section was different to editing the rest of our footage, we wanted it to stand out anyway, however at first we was thinking of changing the contrast so that it was black and white, however after trying this we realised that it may make the footage look amateurish and tacky so instead we decided to edit it in chronological order. This was different as the rest of our video had no order to it.
The girl walked into shot, into the graveyard, up to the grave and placed the flowers down, we thought that if this section wasn't in order it wouldn't make sense.

Continuing Editing

Today we continued to edit our footage, we were hoping to get up to 1 minute 30seconds of footage. We have worked hard to edit a lot of footage, we have made sure we lock in the layers when editing to avoid the song and the video clips from moving accidentally.

We have got a lot of clips within the first section of our music video, this shows fast editing, and it makes the video look more interesting. The layers on the image below show how we have used them well to enable editing to fit in time with the song and use them when we need to.

We also used a graphic match to make the editing look more professional, it shows our abilities of editing and also makes the video more interesting. Below are the two images which show the transition between the graphic match.

Below is the editing we used for the graphic match;

Todays plan

We are planning to add lip syncing up to 3 minutes 14 seconds, this is because we want to show our ability of editing the lip syncing footage. After we have reached 3 minutes 14, we are going to start editing our montage section, we have thought o a smooth way for the transaction where the brightness and contrast is increased a lot so that it looks like the girl is entering a dream-like state.

Editing the Graveyard section

Today in class and after school we added to graveyard footage to our music video, at first we weren't too sure that this footage would flow nicely with the rest of our footage, however by editing some singing between the clips and watching it over, figuring out what we could do for it to flow better we decided that it fit rather well. After adding this our music video was about 2 and a half minutes long. Below are some screen shots.
The below image is where we split up some of the graveyard scene, so the music video didn't become too boring

The image below is a close up of the girls feet walking towards the cemetery, we wanted to use a range of different camera angles, so it didn't just all look the same

The image below is the girl standing at the grave with the boy next to her, although he is supposed to be dead, we filmed this as it's as if its the boys ghost, and he is going to fade out of the shot.

The above image is of some of the footage which we filmed, we will chose what of this we will put in the music video

Editing, Adjusting of Speed

In our music video we tried to improve the quality of our music video by adjusting the speed, we used a lot of slow motion clips to make the video look more surreal. The slow motion clips helped the emphasis of the emotion of the video and it made the girl seem like she was thinking.

The slow motion clips were also useful as it reflected on the idea that things were moving slowly for the girl, and her life was stuck at that moment.

We edited the speed of the clips by changing the the percentage which they were displayed, if it was set to 100% the footage was at the normal time however if we changed it to over 100% it would speed up and below 100% it would slow down.  Most of the time we used clips at between 60 - 80%

Filming

IT became clear to us that we may not have enough footage to fill in the gaps of our footage as the clips are so short and close together we decided to go out and do some more filming.

During lesson on Wednesday we took the camera out and filmed in some enclosed areas over central park and the opening of eastbrook end.

Below are some images of us filming;

Editing

Today in class we done some editing, some pictures of this are below;

The above image is one of our group members, Connor, editing the footage which we have. The below image is of a section of our music video which we have placed together for the start of the song.

The below image is of all the clips we have to chose from, for the london scene and when we went to film over central park on Wednesday. We will probably be using almost all of this in our footage.

Analysing the results of my survey monkey

Below are print screens of some of the results of my survey monkey;

From the above images it is a clear that a vierty of people took my survey, the answers were different, and the age groups ranged from 15 to 25, the type of music people listened to also differed and it shows that different people prefer different genres of music.

Checking the post for my Survey Monkey again

After posting my survey on facebook i decided to see if  I have gained any more feedback on my survey. After looking today i realised there has been an increase in responses.

Although i still only have 10 responses i don't think i will be gaining any more replies so i will analyse the responses that I do have and will soon be creating a wordle in order to see the results clearer.
However although i only have 10 responses this is not a negative thing as each member of the group has created a survey monkey meaning we all have individual feedback which we can share with each other.

Checking the Results for my Survey

Today i decided to check the results for my survey, to see if i had many responses.

Although i have 10 replies to my survey it has only been 4 days, i wont analyse these yet, as i will leave it a few more days to see if i can get a few more results.
In order to hopefully gain more feedback i published my survey onto my facebook homepage to see if any of my friends would answer the survey for me, below is an image;

Creating My Survey Monkey

Today i created my survey to gain a better understanding of the audience of music and people's opinions towards music videos. I want to know what people believe make a good video and if they thing the video is important to the music. I took some screenshots of my survey and the image are below;

Below is a link to my survey;

Research into Past Students Work

We were originally going to use the song 'Rough Cut' but Amber Rubarth, however after noticing past students had used this song we decided to study theirs and then reach a decision;

Positive of the video;

  • The dissolves which were used in the music video are very effective and the fades work well
  • The narrative of the music video links very well with the lyrics of the song, and the video mirrors the words
  • Some effects from final cut express are used effectively
Negatives of the music video;
  • Some of the shots seemed off putting as although the camera angle seemed straight the background of the shot was not a flat surface and the horizon was often slanted
  • There were not as many close up lip synching shots as what we would have expected for a music video
  • The opening sequence didn't seem strong enough to fit the music, It seemed emotionless

Research: What Music Channel would our Music Video be shown on?

We have began to look at what music channel our video would be shown on, after some thought it is believed the MTV would be most suitable for our music video.

This is because MTV has various channels, such as MTV Base MTV Hits, MTV Dance, MTV Rocks and more, this means that on MTV our Music video has more of a chance of being shown.

However MTV Rocks seems most suitable for our music video, as being a regular viewer of the channel it is noticeable that the channel is not limited to only rock music. It often shows Indie music and songs which are likable which are not in the chart. Music by Birdy and Ellie Goulding have often been shown on this channel. Because we feel Allie Moss is like both of these artists we believe the video will do well on MTV Rocks.

Howver MTV are not the only music channels which we play the video, Channels such as Viva, The Chart Show, VH1 and 4 Music may also be likely to show our music video. Many of these channels however show the Hit 40 UK or songs which are in the charts. This means it is less likely to be shown, unless shown as a 'VIP track of the week'

Beginning Editing

Now that we have successfully cut all the clips so that they are shorter and easier to handle we can begin actually editing our footage to our song. We are hoping to achieve a good music video and have it split so that the lip syncing and other footage is split to a good standard.
Below is an image of us beginning to edit;

Editing Using Photoshop; The Pros and Cons

As we are lucky enough to have a photography student in our group, as he wants to edit some of our footage to make the colours seem brighter or more vintage he decided to test out the editing techniques on a small part of footage.

Pros;
Connor is very comfortable about the photoshop techniques and software, so he is able to edit pictures easily. he can easily change the colour and contrast of images.

When editing a clip in photoshop he took a screen grab of what he was doing, which is shown below;
Screen+shot+2011-11-09+at+14.29.49.png

Cons;
When the clip had been exported and put into photoshop it became recognisable that the picture was pixilated, we hope it will increase when we put it back in final cut express. However if we export the whole footage into photoshop it will be even worse, so we would have to do it in small chunks which may prove to be time consuming and we may not be able to edit all the clips.

Filming in London

Recently we filmed at London, we went to Temple to start with hoping to film in a small park, however when we got there we noticed that it didn't open until 12, and at this time it was about 11.20. So we decided to walk round for a bit, just round the corner we found a secluded area which we believed would fit our music video well. The benches and the flowers made it seem very vintage so we decided to film there.  The image below is of the setting which we was filming in, and the image below that one is when we were actually filming the footage.

After we had filmed there we went back to the park by temple, we set up the camera and the tripod and were prepared to film, when we were approached and asked if we had a filming permit, after explaining to them that we were from Robert Clack and it was a part of our filming project they still said we needed a permit, as none of us had any money we had to leave that idea and try to think of something else.

We then went to oxford Circus, we found filming here was simpler than what we thought, we managed to get different angles of lip syncing and just some close ups of my face, images of this are shown below.

We then went to Hanover square to film some more footage, however due to our lack of direction, we could not find Hanover square so we settled with a closer park, which we believed had a nice effective as it would fit our music video well.

Editing Beginning to Upload and Edit

After we had filmed some footage we uploaded it on ti the computer and placed it in Final Cut Express. We wanted to see if the song made these clips look like the belonged in the song as it was mainly scenic footage and we wanted it to look cute.

Screen+shot+2011-11-11+at+12.45.28.png

When watching the clips with the music it became clear to us that they looked cuter and had more of an emotional impact when you could hear the music in the background. When the clips were shown without the sound they didn't have that much of an affect.

Screen+shot+2011-11-11+at+12.41.09.png

These are two of the images which we want to use in our overall footage, however the problem which we have with them is that they are slightly dull and lacking in the colour which we hoped they would of had, as when we filmed that section it was cloudy out which made the day look grey. We could try and enhance the colour and contrast of the images on Final Cut express, but we have  photography student in our group who works well with photoshop and we are hoping he will be able to export the images into photoshop and edit them.

Preparing to Film In London

Before filming in London we decided to make a plan of the day, after we have filmed at London we will have one more filming session on Thursday and then that will be the filming completed hopefully. We will obviously have to re-film some things if we believe we have made a mistake or it is too a good enough standard, however we do have enough footage which means that we may be able to replace clips with something else.
As a member of our group has recently been to London he knew some good places which we would film in, so he drew up a plan so we were organised for the day.

StillCap0000+copy.png

Our Journey will start of at Dagenham east train station, where we will then travel to Temple, we are hoping to recreate some shots of pictures which Connor had previously taken on a photography trip he went on, below are the images showing the location and what we are hoping to achieve;
Canon+Pics+136+copy.jpg

Canon+Pics+112+copy.jpg

Canon+Pics+123+copy.jpg

After filming at Temple we are planning to travel to Oxford Circus to film at Oxford Street and Hanover square, this is also a place where Connor had recently visited so he knew what he was hoping to achieve with filming here.
We are hoping to use different shots with this footage as well as we have already used a variety of shots in our footage, such as a pan shot, long shot and extreme close up. We are also hoping to use all different angles for he same piece or footage as it will provide a better effect.
We want to experience with slowing footage down, this is why we are filming in Oxford Street as it is very busy and the slow effect will have more of an impact, we have sped the song up and downloaded it only our phones so I can easily sit and sing the same speed as the new faster song. By singing faster it means that when we slow the footage down we are hoping that the lip syncing will be in time with the song and the slow motion will be effective.
